Gone Girl: by Gillian Flynn

Image

March is almost done and I have completed book 3 of 12. As some of you may know, I don’t read. I never been a huge fan of it, I mostly skimmed my way through books in High School and College. Now this year I wanted to start reading more. I started a fun book club called “Book Pub” where we read one book a month and discuss it over drinks at a local pub, bar, or drinking establishment.

This month we chose to read Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn. (There will be spoilers below, so if you haven’t read the book please don’t read this.

When I first started reading the book I wasn’t hooked. The beginning was a little confusing at first and a little dry for me to get into. Once the main character, Amy, disappeared it got me hooked. The writing style of this book was every other chapter there it was either Amy talking or Nick talking. The first half of the book with Nick in present time and Amy’s section was her diary entries. In the beginning I was trying to figure out the answer to what happened to Amy and who was guilty. Every time I thought I had an answer a different twist came into play. Especially after the first half of the book was over to find out this entire story of the disappearance of Amy was all Amy’s plan to get back at her husband for cheating. This is when all my previous ideas I had were thrown out the window. Amy was a sick and devilish because of how long (a year) to plan this disappearance. This almost landed Nick in jail and most likely to be put on death row. That is until she saw Nick on the news, saying he wanted her to come home. Nick knew she planned this and wanted to kill her for real now, but more wanted her to go to prison for what she did. When she returned home she blamed the disappearance on being taken by a former boyfriend who raped her and kept her locked up until she was able to kill him. The old boyfriend, Desi, was innocent; it was just a way for Amy to get back home without getting caught. Nick was still trying to figure out a way to get her to slip up and to send her to jail. Finally she announced to him that she was pregnant ( I still am not sure if it was his child or not) but now he dropped his pursuit to put her in jail.

Then the book ended. I am not sure why but this book and the last book I read both ended without finding out what happened in the end. This book is still a mystery to me as I have no idea what would happen with Amy and Nick next. I guess it’s clever for the author to leave us hanging, but some closure would have been nice. We are meeting at Bad Bobby’s Bar on Thursday night to discuss it and I think it will be a great way to see what others think happened after the book was over.

Also at the meeting we will be picking out book number 4. My overall rating for this book would be…4.5 out of 5, the twists, turns, and excitement/mystery, is what I look for in a book and it held up. I first read bad reviews about this book and believe it’s because how it ended, but the overall book I will leave it at 4.5/5.

AM Workouts will be a must…

Well this morning I had to force myself out of bed since I have dinner plans tonight. So I needed to make sure I still got my workout in. It was a struggle but at the same time it was awesome feeling being back to working out in the morning, getting my day started and not having to worry about going back tonight. Especially with summer around the corner I will want to start biking more outside after work, so morning workouts will be crucial. April 1st I plan to get back into the groove of working out in the morning. With march about over my 1-Month of Cardio will be over and it will be back to lifting. I can do my morning lifts and then at night go back for Cardio or bike outside. Let’s bring on the nicer, hotter and more sunshine weather for April…PLEASE!!!

Backwards Triathlon…Failed again…

So today despite getting home late and not getting a lot of sleep. I headed to the gym at 6:45 to get in my Backwards Triathlon (Run, Bike, Swim) that I haven’d done in a while. Well my plans failed again… First I was able to get a solid 2 mile run in, in about 16:50 for time. I then headed to the Cycling or Spinning as the gym calls it now room. This is when things went downhill. We had an instructor that I am not a fan of, we stand on the bikes more than we need to, she isn’t on rhythm with her song choices, she tries to be funny (I think) when she is counting down she will repeat numbers to make it longer, and just fun. (In My Opinion) The songs sometimes during the sprints are slow songs so no motivation there. Anyways I made it through the 55 minutes and was ready to swim. Well forgetful me forgot there is a class in the pool from 8:30-9:15 (which is right when my Spinning Class is over. Which means now tomorrow I need to do extra in the pool because that’s 3 days now that I have missed the pool. Will get in some Cardio tomorrow and then swim double time maybe do the .5k and then do .5k of easy stokes.

Friday Flashback

Another Friday Flashback of BAD BOBBY. This picture if from July 29th 2011 on a night during RAGBRAI. We just got done riding a a long day on RAGBRAI. We got to the house we were camping at, got showered and headed down to the beer garden. We had some drinks like usual, I saw some friends of mine, there was a cool band with a light show and all…etc… Anyways we were leaving as the beer garden was shutting down around midnight. We were walking back to the camp site when we wanted ONE more DRINK. We found a place called Kelsey’s Cocktails and Cafe. This is where it went down hill. We went in to the restaurant that had a bar. We sat at a table an all ordered a Vodka Lemonade. There was another couple in there eating and I think we scared them off because they left. We we so hungry that we ate their uneaten food. Also the waitress brought us out a HUGE jar of pickles and we finished that too. Finally we went up to the bar to party with the staff. We even took the little boombox form the dishes staff out to the floor so we could dance. Finally we were making our own drinks and we were all just going behind the bar to make our own drinks. This was bar far my best experience on RAGBRAI. One lady took my empty glass for a refill, poured 7 ounces of vodka and then splashed in an ounce of lemonade…that was so…STRONG. I quickly drank some and grabbed the lemonade to fill it up to get rid of some of the vodka taste. This like I said was the best bar.

After they finally had to shut down at 3:00 ish AM we heading back to the campsite…BUT the night wasn’t over yet. This is when we were all SOO gone and we were cutting through tents. My buddy saw a guys phone light in his tent and my friend jokingly said “I’m gonna pee on this tent” lol they guy inside was like “you better not!”. At that time we couldn’t find my brother. He finally came out from behind the guys tent after taking a crap…HAHA funniest thing ever! Finally we found a van that we thought might have beer, they said no…but I overheard they were doing a beer run. So we waited and chatted until the beer run got there, swiped a beer and headed back to the campsite. Basically slept for 2-3 hours and got up to ride 75 miles to Coralville. Fun Time, Great Experiences with Great Friends! This is why BAD BOBBY lives for and loves RAGBRAI!

Fastest 1 Mile to date…

Short entry for today, but yesterday after I did 45 minutes on the Elliptical, I jumped on the treadmill to beat my mile record of 8:00 minutes flat by 3 seconds. I finished the mile in 7:57. I will try again this week or next, my goal would be to get a Mile in around 7-7.5 minutes.

St. Patrick’s Day…plus some more!

Yesterday got all GREEN for the day of crazy fun! We started out by having a beer at Bad Bobby’s Bar. Then headed to City Beat to meet up with the group for the night out…I mean day/night out. Enjoyed some green beer, some gummy bears and maybe a few shots. It was a great time, lots of people out despite the weather we had. The last few years the weather was low of 52 and high of 82, so the luck of the Irish ran out when we had a 30 degree cold day.

Today woke up at 6:30 feeling pretty good. I did however make it to the gym to get in some Cardio and also sat in the sauna to sweat some toxins out. The sauna was VERY HOT, it felt like one of those hot, humid and windless summer days. Makes me wish summer was here so I could be doing some long Sunday rides instead.

Friday Flashback!

So I have decided to do a Friday Flashback, and search through my photos and find a crazy or fun photo from past year and talk about it.

I have chose this photo.

This was from back on November 8th, 2008. This is the day of one of the greatest games when Iowa upset #3 Penn St. in football. We headed down early to get our tailgating on. I told my wife (or fiance at the time) that we are going to get tickets to this game, it will be a great game and I had a feeling we would win. Anyways, made the mistake of taking Mr. Beer Bong with me. I was getting carried away as usual and did 2-3 in a row. Then played some drinking games, and drinking more beer. I kept filling up the beer bong and asking who was next, when no one responded, I’d take another. The magic number that morning was 13 Beer Bongs. Needless to say I did not make it to the game. I passed out and the wife had to take me home. I went passed out in the bed and woke up with the final seconds of the game to see the Hawkeyes pull out the victory. If I wouldn’t have gotten carried away, or at-least left the Beer Bong at home I would have been at that game watching a great ending. You Live and You Learn!

Swimming!

Finally I was able to get into the pool this morning. I first did 45 minutes on the elliptical, but then headed to the EMPTY pool! I did 10 laps in 10:44, so my time is getting quicker  but still would like to be at 9 minutes or under when i get to the Triathlon, at-least under 10 minutes. I will be excited to do some trial runs in the actual lake to do a down and back. It might be cold but hopefully I can get that started in May. Would like to get 2-3 trials in under the belt before the big day. Also will plan to do trials of the running and bicycling parts. It’s getting closer and closer 80 days away!

Exhausting Cycling Class…

Tonight was again one of my favorite cycling classes. The instructor pushes you to the limit and make you work you ass off. It’s a 45 minute class, which before hand I ran 2 miles and did a 10 minute warm up on the bike before class started. We go through about 7-8 tracks and each song is a different work out. It helps knowing during the song you know what is coming up next. Plus she said next week Wednesday we will be doing the same class so us all tonight should be ready to kick ass next week.

Keep on Biking!!!

Continuing Education…

The other day I was looking on the Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education classes. I was browsing through the selection looking for classes for Melissa and I to take. We found a couple we liked. Then I noticed you can submit a request for class idea and if it is needed they could add it to the book. I got to thinking about what I could teach, what am I good at. I realized I am usually very…VERY good at getting deals. Finding the specials, discounts, and cheapest products for most of everything I buy. I know how to search Craigslist, eBay, Amazon, Google, Vehicles and other shopping sites to find the same products…BUT find the one that is the cheapest and either free or little shipping cost. I think it would be fun to teach others how to search online when it comes to buying products. I have been known to help some friends find the best deals. I doubt it would be a huge seller for a class. But could always submit the idea and see how it goes from there. Could be a way to make some extra green.

Anyways just a thought…comment if you have any suggestions about it.
