Dog Park

It’s been a LONG time since the Boys and I went to the Dog Park. Decided to surprise them today with a Sunday Morning trip. As I got them loaded in the van, aka Big Betsy, this is what they looked like.

Ready to leave without me, luckily I still had the keys. As we were waiting to back out, this is where the boys decided to sit. Murphy right behind me, and Harley all the way back in the third row.

Workout Wednesday

This year I had a few exercise goals. I wanted to Run Swim and do Cycling Class two times a week. Along with that I plan to do one 3 mile or more run outside each week. Lastly I plan to get the dogs out for at least two walks a week. Last week I failed them in their walks due to rainy wet days. Today however I was able to get them out for a short walk. It will be nice when I can get the dog park back into the routine. Today we did a brisk walk around a few blocks, 15-20 minute tops. Plan is to build up their walls each week. Here is them before we left.

They were very excited to be back out on the open road. Now if only I could get them to stop barking the entire time. Silly pups!

Flashback Friday (Dixie Doodle)

This morning I was waiting in my car at the gym, and this song come’s on the radio: Rod Stewart- Have I told you Lately. Immediately tears came to my eyes and it made me think of Dixie Doodle. Melissa was a Vet Assistant student and got to work one on one with a shelter dog. It was between a Beagle and a Basset Hound. I was like go with the Basset, since you can get to attached to Beagles, and we wouldn’t be able to adopt (with our current living situation at the time). Anyways, the minute I saw the sweet little face, I was attached as well as everyone else that met her. Luckily Melissa has a great Dad and adopted Dixie so we could have her in the family. Unfortunately her time on Earth didn’t last long. We found out that she had cancer and basically there was no cure. We kept her comfortable until that unfortunate night we had to send her to Rainbow Bridge. It’s funny that no mater how long you have a pet for, 1 month, 20 years and everything in between, you get attached and it hurts the heart when you have to say goodbye.

I have went through the Facebook assortment of photos that Melissa and I have posted. Some of them I have picked for very specific reasons and will explain with each picture. Now at the time it was very…VERY sad to lose her so young, but to think of where we have came since then. If we never would have adopted Dixie to the family, we probably would have never tried to look for a Basset Hound to adopt and would never have gotten Murphy. I think she was that Guardian Angel Dog that helped of get over the pain of losing her and to help save a life and adopt Murphy. Now…to look back on the photos….here is Dixie Doodle 🙂

This is Dixie Doodle. She was a fun loving, easy going dog. Like all dogs she had her own personality. Image

This one below is one of my favorite. Dixie is at school with Melissa, and when Melissa sent this to me I set it as my phone background. It lined up perfectly with my front screen to make it look like she was peaking over the screen.

Here is a photo of Melissa and I taking her somewhere, silly dog 🙂

Here are 2 photos of Melissa and Dixie

Here are 2 photo of Dixie and I (The first time I met her at the school she would just bark at me and run away…the one in the blue hoodie is the second time I met here, already warmed up to me)

Here are a few photos just to show that silly personality she had

One of my favorite memories was the K9-Splash event. Took Dixie swimming, I basically walked her into the pool and she took off…one of the best photos that I think we got of her swimming…Image

Finally, she was one of the best “Flower” Dogs at our wedding, and I think in our wedding video as we get into the Limo to leave we hear her barking away sending us good thoughts

Now, it was hard at times to write this (mainly the beginning) but when you look at the photos and she the full life she had in the short time with us it brings some happy tears.

Rest in Peace Doodle…until we meet again at Rainbow Bridge

Foster Parents…for Dogs

This weekend the wife and I decided to too if we could become Foster Parents. We met with the Last Hope Animal Shelter, they had a beagle named Harley. We have a Beagle/Basset mix that we weren’t sure if he would like the other dog or not. We got Harley Saturday around noon and took him to our place. Murphy and him did a lot of sniffing and at first Murphy was a little iffy about having him here. Most of the time the dogs were good but both, especially Murphy gets jealous over attention we give the opposite dog. They don’t share spots well and like children they have to have the same toy the other dog is playing with even if at first they didn’t want it. We take Harley back today around 3 and will decide if we want to foster him long term until we can find him a home, if we do we will get him again next Saturday.

Some photos of the weekend. (Murphy is the Big one, and Harley is the Little one)

Walking the Dog

Today I decided to take my Basset/Beagle, Murphy, for a walk. I learned a few things on this route, made it an interesting adventure.

  1. When walking down a hill in the snow, remember when jumping from snow on a hill to the clear sidewalk that you are still on snow. However I did not and went to jump while my legs went out from underneath me and I fell on my back. Jumped up quickly too avoid sliding into the mud pile and also to save the embarrassment from the 3 workers at the baseball stadium that witnessed it.
  2. Murphy does not know the difference between a real deer and a fake deer. He snuck up on the fake deer starring at it and looking at me confused. As he got closer I yelled .RAWRRR and he jumped out of his skin and took off behind me. (wish I would have gotten that on tape)
  3. On a warmer day, with all the snow melting, be prepared that the entire walk will be muddy, wet and painful to watch your dog who just recently got a bath go from being Black/Brown/White to just Brown and White. (Murphy will be getting a bath tonight)
  4. On my walk I went through the cemetery to take Murphy by my Grandparents or his Great-Grandparents. I introduced him and on the walk out I noticed the big sign of rules that said NO PETS. Ooops, but FYI I was respectful and only walked him on the paths, didn’t let me go potty anywhere and went through quickly.
  5. Never walk through a parking lot of a grocery store/gas station. To many smells and food trash laying around. It was like a mine field trying to maneuver him through without eating all the garbage.

It was an adventurous walk with the dog, below is the epic Fake Deer vs Murphy photo. dog walk
